It Was Ever Thus.

Muncie is Known Far and Wide for Her Hospitality Now and We Hope She May Ever be the Same

Lewis, Ind., Sept., 8, 1890.

At the last reunion of the old 14th Indiana at Vincinnes, Ind., August 13, 14, and 15, a comrade handed me a diary I had written of the first month of our service. On the first page I found the following lines:

"Indianapolis, Ind
July 5, 1861

This morning is a starting point of the realities of a soldiers life. We evacuated Camp Kimball 8 o'clock a. m,, and marched to the Bellefountain depot, where we remained until 1 o'clock p. m., at which time we took the train for Bellair, situated on the Ohio river, a distance of 350 miles. There are many things on our journey to enliven and encourage us. But the greatest of all was the beautiful little city of Muncie, in Delaware county, Ind., where the train stopped for thirty minutes for refreshments, where our regiment was treated to the finest provision the State could afford, cooked and prepared by the hands of the noble and patriotic ladies of that loyal little city and the whole-hearted young men rolled out a barrel of as good ale as ever man drank, of which the boys was not slow to fill their canteens and haversacks and after thanks and God bless you, etc. the train rolled out amid the cheer and waving of hats and handkerchiefs of both citizens and solders. The good people of Muncie will ever hold a sacred spot in the hearts of the old 14th Indiana."

The history of the old 14th Indiana whose leader was that noble old war horse, Gen. Nathan Kimball, the only man that ever "licked" Stonewall Jackson oon equal grounds, and whose regiment returned with more gun shot wounds than it had men. And now I beg, after 29 years have elapsed, in behalf of that gallant old regiment, to tender to the good people of Muncie our earnest and sincere thanks and if any have passed away then to their children and may they ever imitate the grand and nobleness of heart of their loyal and patriotic sires.
