William F. Jones, First Mayor of Muncie

Muncie, Ind., Oct. 28-William F. Jones died in this city last evening. W. F. Jones was born March 20, 1813, in Dutchess county. New York. With his parents, in 1802, he moved to the State of Ohio, Clinton county, and three years later, in 1835, he married Sarah A. Steele. His married life lacked but two days of fifty-five years. Eight children were born to them, and his wife and all of his children, with one exception, survive him. In 1842 he moved from Ohio to Indiana, locating at Hartford City, where he engaged in his work as a carpenter and farmer. He then engaged himself in all matters of public interest, and served the county as school commissioner, and as joint Representative of Blackford and Jay counties, served his people in the Legislature of 1846-47. In 1852 he moved to Muncie, where he has since resided. in that city he has, until his death, taken great interest in all public matters of importance. He was a director in the Whitewater Southern railroad, and also its secretary. He also aided in the location and securing the right of way of the Lafayette, Muncie & Bloomington railroad. He was elected; in 1854, one of the school trustees of Muncie, and was identified with the schools for about ten years. He aided and superintended the building of the first iron bridges in Delaware county and the county poor asylum. In 1873 he became a member of the City Council of Muncie, during which time the E resent city building was erected, in which he had deeply interested himself. He was twice elected Mayor of Muncie, serving four years.
