He Fought In The War With Spain And In The Orient.

The Charles E. Harter, meentioned in a telegram to the War Departent from the Phillippines, as having died of
Dysentary, is thought to be a well-known Muncie young man. Harter lied in Muncie the greater part of his life
until he enlisted for service in the Spanish war on May 16, 1898, under Lieutenant Lewis. He was assigned to
the Twentieth regiment and fought through the Santiago campaign. Later he was transferred to the Eighteenth
Regiment, which proceded at once to the Phillippines. For several years prior to his enlistment he was employed
as a switchman in the Big Four yards. He lived with his sister, Mrs. Jeff Summers, 122 North Cherry street. Mrs.
William Heffner, East Main street, is a also a sister of Harter. His relatives in Muncie have heard nothing con-
cerning his reported death except through newspaper reports. No word has been received from him for some time.
