Widow Jane C Gilbert died at her residence, corner of Walnut and Gilbert streets, in this city, at 12:30 this morning. Her maiden name was Jane Clapp. She was born in the town of Salem, in Washington county, New York, July 10, 1803; was married to Edmund Gilbert in Rupert, Bennington county, Vermont, Dec. 24, 1823, and moved to the town of Greenwich, Washington county, N. Y., where they lived until the spring of 1835, and moved to Middleown, Butler county, Ohio, and the next spring, in 1836, moved to Muncie, then a small village, and into the house in which she died. Her husband died in August, 1857. She was the mother of six children-Hoartio, Azuba, Eliza, Horace, Lydia and John A.-Eliza and John A. are all that survive her. Except Horace and Eliza, all were married. Aunt Jane, as she was familiarly called, was raised in the presbyterian faith and joined the Rev. Drake's church in this city in ----- ---- 18, and since lived and died a zealous believer. All who knew her well loved her as a kind-hearted, honest, industrious to the extreme, prudent, economical lady, wh has seen much trouble-more than many less frail could have borne-possessor of an iron constitution and indomitable will and energy. Although suffering fearfully from the first attack, on the 17th inst., she bore with christian fortitude all, and retained her mind to the end. Her living children have met with an irrepairable loss, and her relatives everything next to a mother. Volney Willson. |
