Death of Richard Gammon

But few there are who do not know Richard Gammon, the young colored exhorter, who was lame, and who gave the city such a fright a year since, because of a rumor that he had the small pox. Richard Gammon is dead. For a year past his heallth has beed gradually falling, and at times he has been very ill. Some time since he went to Tennessee on business for his mother, who is the widow of Wesley Gammon, who died so suddenly after leaving his week at the gas factory, and about four weeks since, he returned, so ill that he had to be assisted from the bus to house. From this time, he sank rapidly, and died on Wednesday night, aged 25 years. Young Gammon was looked upon by among his colored brethren of the church as a most excellent young man, and his death is truly mourned. His funeral occurred this morning from his late home on the corner of Main and Franklin streets, Rev. Baxter, of Indianapolis, preaching a funeral service and others making a few remarks. After a solemn service, he was tenderly laid away in Beech Grove Cemetery, followed by a large proportion of the colored population of the city.
