Miss Sarah Calvert, Pioneer Resident and Owner of Valuable Property, is Dead Miss Sarah Calvert, 70, one of the oldest pioneer residents of Muncie, and wealthy land holder, died at her home, 206 South High street, Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock as a result of a paralytic stroke, which she suffered last Saturday. Death was not unexpected as the deceased had been afflicted with paralysis for over a year previous to her death. She was born and raised in Muncie and was one of the most widely known of the older residents of the city. Miss Calvert's history is not an ordinary one. She was born in the old Calvert homestead, which still stands in West Jackson street just within the corporation lines of the town of Normal City. She was also well known as a business woman of ability for many years, having been associated with a sister, also deceased, in the millinery business on High street, west of the court house. After a successful business career of about twenty years. Miss Calvert retired, having accumulated considerable wealth. The Calvert land addition, comprising a tract of several acres of land fronting on West Jackson street, just across the White river, was owned by the Calvert family and was in the possession of Miss Calvert at her death. Aside from this land she possessed several valuable properties in the residence and business districts of the city. Two brothers and a number of more distant relatives, survive the deceased. The brothers are Messrs. George and Edward Calvert. The funerla services over the remains will be conducted from the late residence in South High street, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. E.E. Randle, pastor of the High street M. E. church, of which the deceased was a leading member, will officiate, The remains will be laid to rest in Beech Grov cemetery. |
