William Barnes, father of John W. Barnes of the Pharos, died yesterday morning at 11 o'clock at his home in Muncie, after an illness of about six weeks. The deceased was 74 years of age and was a valued member of the community in which he lived. Mr. and Mrs. Barnes were present at his bedside when his spirit took its flight. |
The Muncie News of Thursday contains the following notice of the death of William Barnes, father of Mr. John W. Barnes of the Pharos: “William Barnes, an old and well-known citizen, died at 11 o'clock today, at his residence, corner Charles and High streets, after an illness of many weeks. He was born in Beaver Co., Pa., June 12th, 1816, and had therefore just passed the 74th year of his age. He came to Indiana with his parents in 1818, and first settled near Winchester. The family moved to Muncie in 1837, and Mr. Barnes has been an honored resident of this city ever since, covering a period of 53 years. He was married to Evaline Wachtell in 1842, and she and seven children, all grown, survive him, and all were present at the death-bed. Mr. Barnes was a contractor and carpenter, and erected many important buildings during his life, a number of which yet stand as a monument to his honest workmanship. He was an honorable man and a model citizen, and no one stood better before the community in which he had so long resided. He had been for many years a member of the Presbyterian church. The children are as follows: Mrs. J. F. Sanderf, Mrs. Calista Champlin, Mrs. C. S. Westlake, Miss Bessie Barnes, city, James M. Barnes, McComb. O., John W. Barnes, Logansport, Ind., Mrs. M. D. Miller, Fargo, North Dakota. The funeral will occur Saturday. Particulars will be given to-morrow." |
