The Muncie Morning News of January 13, 1883, published an article reviewing health department statistics of the previous year. It included the number of births and deaths, the latter of which were broken down into age groups. That article went on to note particular diseases and their victims. It is noted that the report only includes those "for the last quarter only, but for the small pox scourge at Granville, would have shown but seven cases of disease of a contageous character."
