This map of Zion Chapel Cemetery is a work in progress. This cemetery is currently undergoing clean-up and restoration by a small group of volunteers in conjunction with the Washington Township Trustee and the Delaware County Historical Society Cemetery Preservation Committee. General brush clean-up will likely run through the end of 2021 and into 2022. We hope that the preservation committee can continue with light work through the end of the year then work toward the repairs and resetting next year. Anyone interested in volunteering with the committee is encouraged to contact Bob Good, committee chairman, at dchspcpc@gmail.com to learn proper cleaning and preservation techniques. Rule number one is always to do no damage. That means to the markers and yourself.

Official documentation for this cemetery is nearly non-existant. The current trustee, like the previous one, has no paperwork whatsoever. Zip. Zilch. Nada. It is unclear when, why, how, and under whose responsibilty the records disappeared. Two maps of lot owners are in possession of Jennifer Lewis Sparks. They are xerox copies obtained in the 1970s or earlier by the Lewis family from an unknown source. Neither is dated. Based on the information contained, future efforts will be made to ascertain approximate dates. According to Leonard Lewis (1893-1978) whose Lewis relatives spread across six generations here, the area to the north of the drive beyond the first row of lots was the old section. He clearly recalled from his youth that area being populated mostly by wooden crosses. All signs of those are long gone at this point with only a few permanent markers remaining.

The old part has no known lot numbering system. The one laid out in the map below is unofficial and is strictly intended as help in locating graves in that area. The 'lot' diminsions in that area are based off of the grid pattern used in the later plotted areas and make it appear that some families are split among two lots, when in fact no such divide existed. In the westerm-most part of the old section, some burials seem a bit random and don't fall into neat rows like the rest of the burials. For the sake of locating the lots on site, I have numbered these from the corner closest to the entrance and they are identified as OP01 through OP51

The second phase of lots (the first with official identification) were numbered with one lot to the right of the drive and two to the left from the southwest to the northeast catalogued as 001 through 051. Some in-ground lot markers have survived, most with the numbers mowed off. 052 begins the third phase at the northwest corner of the old part then to the south west ending at 105. The fourth phase began at that corner and was numbered counter clockwise around the entire perimeter including the old part. These numbered 106 through 172.

Lot owners were gleaned from the maps and may or may not reflect the family of those buried there. As time allows, lot cards linked to those entries will be populated with identified burials. 'X' in the old part identifies those areas with marked graves.

Updates will be noted at the top of this page while this project is under way. Once completed, this page will be linked through the cemetery index on the main page. Every effort is being made to track down burials especially in light of so many unmarked graves. Many have been identified as buried here, but their specific locations are lost to time.
