Eaton Cemetery

October 21, 1861, Charles Carter and his wife, Mary Ann, sold a piece of property to Joel Long, Wilson Martin and Beniah Ashenfelder, serving as trustees of a grave yard. The parcel was described as 'commencing ninety links (.90 ch) North of the South East corner of the North West quarter of the South East quarter of Section twenty-three (23) in Township twenty-two (22) north of Range ten East (10) running thence north on the east line of said quarter five chains and 71 links (5.71 ch), thence South seventy and one half degrees east 70 1/2 deg) five chains twenty-one and a half links (5.21 1/2 ch) thence South twelve and three quarter degrees West (12 3/4 deg) five chains and fifty four links (5.54 ch) thence North eighty two degrees (82 deg) West three chains and forty-seven links (3.47 ch) to the place of beginning containing two acres & fourteen hundredths of an acre.'

On the same date, James and Alice Long also sold a piece of land to the above listed trustees for ten dollars. The property adjoining Carter's is described as ' commencing ninety links North of the South East corner of North West quarter of the South East quarter of Section Twenty three (23) in Township twenty two (22) North of Range Ten East (10) running thence North on the East line line of said quarter five chains and seventy one links (5.71 ch) thence North seventy & one half degrees (70 1/2') west ninety three links, thence South five degrees East (5') five chains & eighty nine links (5.89ch) thence South eighty two degrees East (82') eighty seven and one half links (.87 1/2 ch) to the place of beginning containing five tenths of an acre (.5) A.'

On August 27, 1873, James Long and wife, Lois, sold a second parcel to the trustees of Eaton Cemetery listed as Beniah Ashenfelder, Benjamin Youngs, and Wilson Martin for $100. This piece was designated for burial purposes only, and is described as 'Commencing sixty two (62) feet West of South East corner of the North West quarter of the South East quarter of Section twenty three (23) in Town twenty two North, Range ten (10) East Running thence Northm Twenty one (21) Rods, thence North Westerly Ten (10) Rds and two and one half (2 1/2) feet, to a stone fifteen (15) feet East of the South East corner of lot Twenty five (25) in James Long's Addition to the town of Eaton thence a South Western course parallel with the East Line of Lots Twenty five (25) and Twenty six (26) in said Long's Addition to Eaton to the South line of said North West quarter of the South East quarter, Twenty three (23) Rds. and fourteen (14) feet, thence East along said line Nineteen (19) Rds and three (3) feet to the place of beginning, containing Two (2) acres and Nine (9) hundredths, more of less.'

The area was fenced a the county surveyor went to work laying out the plots that would be available for sale.

In theory, it appears that the resultant total acreage would be 5.54 acres. The cemetery fell into disrepair over time. Some combination of vandalism, carelessness and mother nature has certainly left their mark. It seems to be occasionly maintained these days, but it appears that many stones have been lost in the mean time. The total current land holdings for the Eaton Cemetery to nearly 3.5 acres. The 2021 owner of record is the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
