The Third of a Series of Biographical Sketches That Will Appear in the Herald from Day to Day
Dr. Hastings was born near New Cartle, Ind., March 1, 1840. His father, who was a farmer, died 1854. Mrs. Hastings, mother of the doctor, is atill living and is in her 82nd year and makes her home with him. At tbe age of 19 years, he, with the family, moved to Richmond, Ind., where better school facilities could be obtained. After Mr. Hastings had finished his course in the High school, he entered Earlham college. This was in the year 1863. He took a four years course and graduated in 1867. He then accepted a position as teacher and superintendent of schools and was also interested in Normal school work. For two years he was principal of the High school at Dublin, Ind., and was then appointed as superintendent of publie instruction, the position formerly held by Barnabas C. Hobbs, and for ten years was located at Bloomingdale, after which he went to Wabash and for two years taught in tbe college. His next move was to Decatur, Ind. where for three years he was superintendent of tha city schools. During all this time Mr. Hastings was studying medicine under homeopathic instruction of Dr. Davis. From Decatur Mr. Hastings went to Cincinnati, Ohio and attended the Pulte Homeopathic Medical college and graduated in the spring of 1877. He then returned to Decatur and entered into the practice of medicine. In 1883 he moved to Spiceland. Ind., and practiced medicine until 1887 [illegible] Muncie.

Desirable office rooms were hard to obtain in the magic city at that time and after occupying several of them a good location was finally obtained in tbe property of Rev. Guthrie, 409 East Main street where the doctor can now be found. Beside his regular practice he has taken a special course of studies of tbe diseases of women and gives it special attention. He has also attended tbe Chicago Medical college in the study of Hernia and Hemorrhoids. Tbe doctors office ia well equipped with medical appliances and an electro theraputic cabinet and sun treatment for chronic cases. The doctor in 1870 married Miss Ada Towell of Bloomingdsle who died Nov. 2nd, 1989. On June 4th, l896 he was married to Miss Carrie B. White of this city.
