The Second of a Series of Biographical Sketches That Will Appear in the Herald from Day to Day
Charles L Bender was born at Yorktown, ind, Sept 27, 1855. His father's family consisted of girls and four boys. Charles is the oldest boy living his oldest brother having been drowned. His father, who was a shoemaker by trade moved to Daleville in 1859 where young Charles attended school until he became twelve years old. He then went to Chesterfield to learn carriage painting and worked at that trade for five years. At the end of that time he went to Indianapolis an learned fresco painting. From Indianapolis he went to Daleville and after following the painter's trade for a season he entered the general store of J M Gray as clerk. He was attentive to business and learned rapidly. He remained two years with Mr Gray and then went to Anderson, Ind, where he accepted a position as salesman in a large shoe store.

In 1880 he came to Muncie and secured a place in the Globe clothing house at it's opening in the room now occupied by Stewart & Stewart's drug store. The store being owned by Parker and Powell. The Globe then consolidated with the New York store and moved into the Boyce block and handled dry goods and clothing under the firm of Boyce, Cook & Whitney. Mr Bender worked for the new firm one year and when Mr Boyce bought out his partner's he remained with him two years.

Mr Bender then became manager of the clothing department for three years. The house then changed hands. Mr Bender and Mr Shoemaker bought the Globe and continued the business for six years. Then C L Bender and W S Peek of Syracuse, N Y, bought Mr Shoemakers interest an after two years moved into their present location 214 and 216 East Main street. They carry a full line of goods of all grades sizes and styles and are able to give their many customers the full value of their money. The house employes eight clerks.

Mr Bender is a member of the following orders, Elks, I O O F, Maccabees and K of P. He is treasurer of the Elks and trustee of Welcome Lodge K of P.

May 25, 1880, he was married to Miss Isabelle Gray of Daleville. They have one child Charles V, born June 19, 1894. Mr Bender has built himself a handsome residence at 714 E Main street. Mr Bender is a genial, sociable and public spirited man.
