Joel Russell
Hamilton Township
An Old Resident

Joel Russell. aged 68 years, has lived in the county 49 years, on the same tract of land,
out of which he has hewn his present pleasant home. Mr. Russell had many pleasant hunts
with Indians, Delawares and Munseys. Deer and bear were plenty; the latter in particular.
It was but a pleasant passtime (sic) to go out and kill a deer, and sometimes a fine fat
bear, and this was the sweetest meat he ever ate. The Indians were pleasant companions
in a hunt; they knew all about the habit of the game, and were also gererous in the
division of the spoils. He had the experience of being frequently lost in the wild woods.

His place of voting was at Muncie. The nearest mill was at Smithfield. There were no meetings
in this part of the county at that time, and the Sabbath was the best day of the week to hunt
and cut bee trees, and they did not fail to send portions of such to their neighbors as might
be in need. The people were generous, sociable and happy.
