Mr. Allen began the business in which he is been so eminently successful in 1878. He occupies a sales room in the Opera House Block 25 x
20' in dimensions and carries a full line of the finest brands of cigars, tobaccos, pipes and smokers articles, etc. He controls the most central
position in any house in this line in Muncie and has increased his business fully threefold since the date of inception. Mr. Allen is a native
of Vermont where he was born in 1826. He came to Indiana seven years ago from Kentucky, where he had resided for some time. He
rendered his country efficient service during the war of the rebellion and achieved a brilliant record. He served in the 40th Ohio one and one
half years and in the 8th Ohio Battery the same length of time, serving in all a period of three years, securing honorable military record. He
enlisted as a private, but was subsequently promoted to the position of Lieutenant in Company K, 40th Oh. The. I., And after resigning on
account of ill health was chosen Captain and Major successfully of the 20th O. N. G. He was on detached service during a greater part of
the time, holding at one time the position of Provost Marshall at Louisville Kentucky, and was honorably discharged in 1865. After the war he
settled in Stoddard County, Missouri, where he taught school successfully for eight years. He also followed the profession of teaching in
Kentucky, Tennessee and in other states before coming to the city and engaging in his present enterprise.
